A Firearms Permitholder is only authorized to carry an exposed (i.e. non-concealed) loaded firearm only of the caliber(s) listed on the firearms permit card and only when performing the duties of the license associated with the permit.

A Firearms Permit may only be associated with the following license types:

  • Security Guard registration
  • Private Patrol Operator license (company may only be structured as a sole ownership or partnership)
  • Private Patrol Operator Qualified Manager
  • Private Investigator license (company may only be structured as a sole ownership or partnership)
  • Private Investigator Qualified Manager
  • Alarm Company Operator (company may only be structured as a sole ownership or partnership)

A Baton Permit may only be issued by BSIS to individuals who successfully complete the required baton training course and who either possess a valid and current BSIS-issued Security Guard registration or is applying for a BSIS Security Guard registration. A Baton Permit is only valid when the individual holds a valid and current Security Guard registration. Pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section 7584.5, a Baton Permit is subject to renewal two years from the date of issuance.

A Proprietary Private Security Officer (PSO) is not the same as a Security Guard (G) registration. A PSO is unarmed, wears a distinct uniform, interacts with the public, works for a single employer, and cannot have their security services contracted out to another entity. If a PSO separates from their employer and is then hired by a different employer, they do not need to apply for a new PSO registration.

A Repossession Agency Employee (RAE) registrant may only work for the licensed Repossession Agency (RA) for which the original RAE registration was issued. If the RAE changes employers, they must re-register with the Bureau within 15 working days and pay all applicable fees. Further, if the RAE is employed by more than one RA company, they must hold an accompanying RAE registration for each RA company where they work. Applications for initial registration and re-registration are available from BSIS-licensed Repossession Agencies.
